49TH ANNUAL ARMED FORCES DAY CELEBRATION ON MAY 16-18
Torrance, Calif., April 7, 2008 - The City of Torrance continues its long-standing tradition on May 17, 2008 as it hosts its 49th Annual Armed Forces Day Celebration and Parade. The City, one of few cites designated by the Department of Defense, will once again honor the men and women of our nation’s military with a three-day celebration beginning on Friday, May 16 continuing through Sunday, May 18 with the Parade highlight on Saturday, May 17 that will begin at 1:30 p.m. During this weekend, the following events that will occur in the City:
Military Exhibits: Military exhibits on display, including aircrafts, vehicles, support equipment at the Del Amo Fashion Center parking lot between Acapulco & Macy’s (previously Robinson’s May) on May 16 & 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on May 18 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday.
Free Concert: The United States Marine Corps 1st Marine Division Band will perform for free at the James Armstrong Theatre on May 16 at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Parade: 49th Annual Armed Forces Day Parade will run along Torrance Boulevard from downtown Torrance and end at the City Hall on May 17 at 1:30 p.m.
This year’s Grand Marshal, Major General Michael R. Lehnert of the United States Marine Corps, will lead the parade of over 50 entries from active, Guard and reserve military units from the five branches of the Armed Forces. The parade will also include flyovers by military aircraft and will have military vehicles of all descriptions; Humvees, armored personnel carriers, support vehicles and main battle tanks will also rumble down the streets of Torrance. Additionally, military and elected dignitaries will honor the hundreds of military service men and women as they pass in review.
This year, the United States Army Reserve is also celebrating its 100th Anniversary and the United States Navy is marking the 100th Anniversary of the Great White Fleet, bringing more historic significance to this event and more reason to celebrate.
The community is invited to gather along the parade route and cheer for our sons, daughters, friends, husbands and wives who have been called to duty in defense of our nation’s beliefs and principles and to secure a more peaceful world.

Hàng ngàn người đã chờ sẳn hai bên đường nhiều giờ trước của một ngày trời thật trong để chào đón ngày quân lực Hoa Kỳ , những Chiến Sĩ Hoa Kỳ đủ mọi binh chủng trở về từ những chiến trường đẩm máu khốc liệt nhất hiện nay Chiến trường Iraq, A Phú Hản và những nơi biến động nhất trên thế giới, tất cả đều ngạc nhiên khi thấy lại những bộ quân phục của vài chục năm về trước một thời chiến tranh thật khốc liệt đã đi qua Chiến Tranh Việt Nam. Lần đầu tiên toán Quốc Quân Kỳ Việt Nam Cộng Hòa tham dự Ngày Quân Lực Hoa Kỳ.
Truyền thống của thành phố Torrance miền nam California từ năm 1949 cho đến nay họ đã tổ chức 49 lần Diễn Hành chỉ một khác biệt duy nhất là sự xuất hiện của Quốc Kỳ Việt Nam Cộng Hòa lá cờ vàng ba sọc đỏ , trên lộ trình Đại Lộ Torrance với những hàng cây cao vút . ngoài những người tham dự vổ tay thật lớn và những cánh tay dài vươn ra vẫy tay Toán Quốc Quân Kỳ VNCH, những cựu quân nhân Hoa Kỳ từng tham chiến tại Viêt Nam đứng nghiêm chỉnh chào đón, nhưng trân trọng nhất là những quân nhân Hoa Kỳ tại ngủ từng nhóm một đứng nghiêm chỉnh chào tay cho đến khi nào Toán Quân Kỳ VNCH đi qua họ mới đem tay xuống, tiếng hò reo hai bên đường vẫn tiếp tục không ngừng khi thấy lại những quân xa và những quân nhân từng tham dự trong Chiến Tranh Việt Nam .
Chiếc Trực thăng sau một hồi bay lượn rồi bổng dừng lại một cánh tay thò ra vẫy tay đoàn diễn hành trong những sự kiện xảy ra thật nhanh và nhanh hơn nửa vì đây là lần đầu tiên cho tất cả Cựu Quân Nhân VNCH Tham Dự Diễn Hành, cuộc chiến đã đi qua hơn 33 năm có lẽ đây là lần đầu tiên họ thấy quá nhiều binh sỉ, quân xa, và những sinh hoạt của Quân Đội một phút giây nào đó thóang qua những hình ảnh Chiến Tranh Việt Nam bổng nhiên lại trở về trong giây phút thật hân hoan và phấn khởi.
Rồi Toán Quốc Quân Kỳ tiếp tục đều bưóc một hai ba bốn, trên khán đài chính hàng chục Tướng Lãnh Hoa Kỳ đã đứng Ngiêm Chỉnh Chào Tay, hàng trăm Sỉ Quan Cao Cấp khác đại diện mọi binh chủng trong quân lực Hoa Kỳ củng nghiêm Chỉnh Chào Đón Tóan Quốc Quân Kỳ Việt Nam Cộng Hòa. Trên những loa phóng thanh giọng trầm ấm của người xướng ngôn viên vang lên " Toán Quốc Quân Kỳ Việt Nam Cộng Hòa tham dự diễn hành hôm nay thuộc mọi Quân Binh Chủng của QLVNCH
họ thay mặt cho hơn 350,000 quân nhân Việt Nam Cộng Hòa , hơn 58 ngàn quân nhân Hoa Kỳ và hơn 6000 quân nhân đồng minh đã nằm xuống trên chiến trường Viêt Nam sự hiện diện của họ nhắc nhở chúng ta đừng quên hàng ngàn quân nhân mất tích trong chiến tranh Việt Nam vẫn chưa tìm kiếm được , Toán Quốc Quân Kỳ Việt Nam Cộng Hòa và Hoa Kỳ nhắc nhở đến nhiều thế hệ mai sau lòng biết ơn và tri ân đến những anh hùng quên thân mình đem máu xương đổi lấy Tự Do và An Bình cho nhân loại " giọng nói trầm và âm thanh ghi xâu đậm mãi trong lòng những người tham dự.
Những Quân Nhân Hoa Kỳ với những hình lưu niệm chụp cùng Cựu Quân Nhân Quân Lực Việt Nam Cộng Hòa, Cựu Quân Nhân Hoa Kỳ Tham Chiến trong chiến tranh Việt Nam mừng rỡ khi thấy những bộ quân phục trong Chiến Tranh Việt Nam gặp lại những Chiến hữu từng một thời chiến đấu bên nhau kể lại những địa danh đẩm máu đã đi qua trên đất nước Việt Nam trong binh lữa và nhất là Quốc Kỳ Việt Nam Cộng Hòa , lá cờ vàng ba sọc đỏ vẫn tung bay ngạo nghễ trong vòm trời tự do. DISPERSAL AREA: MADRONA AT TORRANCE BLVD: All entries are to turn in their line-of-march number identifier to uniformed personnel at this point. Vehicles that are Parade entries, except those returning to the Exhibit Area, will disperse north on Madrona Ave. Parade participants are invited to visit the Recreation Center for refreshments upon finishing the parade route. Civilian parade participants may park in the designated lot north of the northwest corner of Civic Center Dr. at Maple Ave, if so desired, by driving north on Madrona, making a right turn to eastbound Del Amo, following Del Amo as it curves southward and becomes Maple Ave., then south to the parking area.
Units or equipment returning to the Exhibit Area will be directed to turn left at the corner of Torrance Blvd. and Madrona Ave. and then be escorted back to their position at the static display area. Turn in your line-of-march identifier before returning to the exhibit area.
GRAND MARSHAL The Grand Marshal will be located in the center of the Reviewing Stands. Salutes should be rendered in front of the Grand Marshal.

Sau nhiều năm chờ đợi ghi danh Toán Quốc Quân Kỳ Việt Nam Cộng Hòa vơí Cờ Vàng Ba Sọc Đỏ Việt Nam Cộng Hòa lại được tung bay trên nền trời của những người yêu chuộng Tự Do và Hòa Bình của nhân loại , sánh bước cùng với các Chiến Binh Hoa Kỳ hiện đang tham chiến trên các Chiến Trường Iraq, A Phú Hãn đem máu xương mình để bảo tồn truyển thống hào hung bất khuất cũng như hơn 350,000 Chiến Sĩ và hàng triệu đồng bào của Việt Nam Cộng Hòa đã Hy Sinh trong cùng một chí hướng.
Sự hiện diện của toán Quốc Quân Kỳ Việt Nam Cộng Hòa là một niềm Vinh Dự chung cũng bày tỏ lòng tri ân đến những Chiến Sĩ anh hùng đã đem máu xương mình để đánh đổi an bình và tự do cho nhân loại .

And thousands soldiers missing in action are still unaccounted for. The Color Guard represents and honors all the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom . The Group have participated in many of the parades and community services to help their Veterans"

Please note the following reminders and guidelines for this year’s Parade:
1. The starting time for the Parade is 1:30 p.m.
2. The parade route is Torrance Blvd., starting at Crenshaw Blvd. and ending at Madrona Ave.
3. This directive will assist you in arriving at the correct location at the appropriate time. Please pay particular attention to your arrival time.
4. This Parade has been structured as Prologue, Division I, Division II, and Division III.
5. Participation trophies will be given to all units involved in the parade upon check in at designated area. No awards will be distributed for performance.
6. No hydraulic equipped personal vehicle(s) will be allowed on the parade route
7. No items shall be thrown or given out along the parade route. This includes, but is not limited to; candy, flags, posters, etc.
8. The Event and Parade Directors will identify parade participants who do not follow the parade directives, and their participation in future events may be jeopardized.
9. Civilian Parade entrants will be limited to five (5) vehicles.
PARADE SCHEDULE
PARADE START TIME - 1330 HOURS A. PROLOGUE - Arrive at Marshaling Area no later than 1200 hours B. DIVISION I - Arrive at Marshaling Area no later than 1215 hours C. DIVISION II - Arrive at Marshaling Area no later than 1230 hours D. DIVISION III - Arrive at Marshaling Area no later than 1245 hours ACCESS ROUTE TO MARSHALING AREAS* In order to ensure maximum control and uninterrupted movement of vehicles along access routes to the Marshaling Area, please adhere to routes shown on the attached map. It is recommended that all units arrive via the 405 Freeway, using the Western Avenue exit; travel southbound Western Avenue to the following:
Prologue units are to take Western Ave. southbound to Del Amo Blvd, turn right to travel westbound to Van Ness Ave., turn left and travel southbound to Torrance Blvd., turn right and travel westbound to the Marshaling Area at Torrance Blvd east of Crenshaw Blvd.
Division I units are to take Western Ave. southbound to Del Amo Blvd, turn right to travel westbound to Van Ness Ave., turn left and travel southbound to Torrance Blvd., turn right and travel westbound to the Marshaling Area at Torrance Blvd and Amapola Ave.
Division II units are to take Western Ave. southbound to Del Amo Blvd, turn right to travel westbound to Van Ness Ave., turn left and travel southbound to Torrance Blvd., turn right and travel westbound to the Marshaling Area at Torrance Blvd and Arlington Ave.
Division III units are to take Western Ave. southbound to Del Amo Blvd, turn right to travel westbound to Van Ness Ave., turn left and travel southbound across Torrance Blvd., continue on Cabrillo to Cravens, turn right and travel to the Marshaling Area at Cravens Ave. and Engracia Ave. *NOTE TO MILITARY PARTICIPANTS: THOSE ATTENDING THE BBQ AT EL PRADO PARK SHOULD REFER TO THE INFORMATION FLYER INCLUDED IN YOUR DIRECTIVE.
MARSHALING AREA and CHECK-IN Upon reaching the appropriate marshaling location (each one is identified by an easy-up and corresponding sign) according to your assigned division, you or your unit’s representative will check-in with a police department representative at which time you will receive your line-of-march number identifier and your participation trophy. A Parade representative will assist you in proceeding to your assigned place in the parade line-of-march.
All transportation vehicles will then proceed to the Dispersal Parking Area on Maple Ave. north of Civic Center Dr. Bus drivers should contact a police officer stationed on Maple Ave. at Civic Center Dr. for direction to the bus parking area. All other vehicles will park in the designated (signed) lot at the northwest corner of Maple Ave. at Civic Center Dr. To reach the parking area, drive west on Carson St. to Hawthorne Blvd., turn right (north), then proceed to Del Amo Blvd., turn right (east). Continue eastbound on Del Amo through Madrona Ave., and follow the roadway as it curves southward and becomes Maple Ave. Continue on Maple Ave. to the parking area.
PROLOGUE: check-in location is Torrance Blvd. immediately east of Crenshaw Blvd. DIVISION I: check-in location is Torrance Blvd. at Amapola Ave. DIVISION II: check-in location is Torrance Blvd. at Arlington Ave. DIVISION III: check-in location is Cravens Ave. at Engracia Ave.
Please note your Division check-in location as shown on the map. March formation and distances between units will be established at Crenshaw Blvd. Parade officials will be located in each Division Area and at the starting point to assist you. Please follow their instructions.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION A. Any person requiring medical aid should contact the nearest police officer or parade official for assistance.
B. Restroom facilities will be available at the Marshaling Area and various locations along the Parade Route.
C. We suggest that parade entry coordinators arrange for any refreshments they deem necessary for their participants at the marshaling area and during the parade. Water is especially important. We are providing refreshments for parade participants at the Recreation Center when they reach the dispersal area.

Torrance is one of few cities nationwide sanctioned by the Department of Defense to honor our Armed Forces through an annual Armed Forces Day Parade & Celebration.
Torrance's Armed Forces Day Parade has the distinction of being the nation's longest running military parade sponsored by any city.
Last year's celebration brought approximately 60,000 people to crowd the Parade route, and staff is expecting a similar turnout this year.
The year 2010 marks the 51st year that the City of Torrance has hosted an Armed Forces Day Celebration to honor the nation's military. Torrance's celebration lasts from Friday, May 14, 2010 through Sunday, May 16, 2010.
On Saturday, May 15, 2010, the parade begins at 1:30 p.m. at Crenshaw Boulevard and travels one-mile west on Torrance Boulevard to Madrona Avenue. It ends approximately at 3:30 p.m.
Each year, the City of Torrance identifies one branch of the military - the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, or Coast Guard - as the "honored service" of the Armed Forces Day Celebration. A high-ranking member of the honored service is invited to serve as Grand Marshal.
This year's celebration honors the United States Coast Guard.
Besides the Parade highlight, the community can enjoy other festivities during the 51st Annual City of Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade & Celebration, including military exhibits and a free concert by a band from the honored branch.
Military exhibits on display, including aircrafts, vehicles, support equipment may be viewed at the north end of the Del Amo Fashion Center at the lower parking lot west side of the parking structure on Friday, May 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday, May 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Sunday, May 16 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The United States Coast Guad Band will perform for free on May 14 at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the James Armstrong Theatre, 3330 Civic Center Drive.
The Torrance legacy of the Armed Forces Day celebration began under the leadership of Mayor Isen in 1960 and has grown throughout the years to be considered a Southern California tradition. According to Mayor Isen, the parade was to "increase public respect and understanding for military service and promote civic-military relationships."

Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade là diễn hành lớn nhất của Quân lực Hoa Kỳ tại miển tây chi phi lên đến hàng trăm ngàn dollars cho 3 ngày. Ngày thứ Sáu 14 tháng 5 sẽ có Ban Quân Nhạc trình diễn tại Armstrong Theater, ngày 15 tháng 5 Diễn hành và trong 3 ngày 14, 15 và 16 tháng 5 đều có triễn lãm của Quân Lực Hoa Kỳ

A: The Blair House is the building officially known as The President's Guest House. It is located on Pennsylvania Avenue across the street from the White House and its principal use is as a guest house for foreign chiefs of state and heads of government visiting the President.
It is named the Blair House after the Blair Family who owned he residence and lived there from 1835 until 1943. In 1943 it was purchased from the family by President Franklin Roosevelt for use as a guest house for foreign leaders. The Blairs were the nearest neighbor of every President from Andrew Jackson through Franklin Roosevelt. A great deal of American history occurred in the house when the Blairs lived there. The term "kitchen cabinet" was born in the house when Andrew Jackson's friends and advisors would gather in the Blair's kitchen.

A: When a foreign chief of state or head of government visits the United States, the Secret Service provides security for them from entry in the United States through departure. This includes not only Washington, D.C. but anywhere in the United States they may travel.
A foreign minister is provided security by the State Department's Diplomatic Security (DS) Service. DS may also provide security for foreign dignitaries who are not foreign ministers. For example, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, were provided security by DS during their visit to the United States.
Q: What is the process for accrediting a new Ambassador to the United States?
A: A government must request agrement and await approval for an individual to be accepted as Ambassador to the United States. Agrement often is requested in the form of a diplomatic note from the Embassy in Washington to the Department of State or from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to an American Embassy abroad. After agrement is approved, the local embassy in Washington should be in touch with the Office of Protocol Diplomatic Affairs Division regarding the arrival of the new Ambassador in Washington.
The Embassy should submit the Form DS-2008 (Notification of Termination of Diplomatic, Consular, or Foreign Government Employment) for the previous Ambassador. After the new Ambassador has arrived in Washington with the necessary documents, the Office of Protocol will arrange for him/her to present copies of credentials to the Secretary of State or her designee. The Embassy should submit the Form DS-2003 (Notification of Appointment of Foreign Diplomatic and Career Consular Officer) for the new Ambassador. The final step is for the new Ambassador to present credentials to the President at a White House Credentialing ceremony.
The City of Torrance is one of the few cities in the nation designated by the U.S. Department of Defense to host an Armed Forces Day celebration. The city celebrates with the Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade, the Nation's longest running military parade. The 49th Annual Parade will take place Friday, May 16 through Sunday, May 18, 2008. Exhibit areas will feature displays and equipment from all five branches of the Armed Forces. Army exhibits include an M-1 Abrams tank, Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle, the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter, an Army Reserve hospital, Improvise Explosive Device defeating robots, the "Americas Army" game and more.
